"There are so many men like Leroy E. Jacobson who remain silent heroes, who deserve to be recognized. But this is a start."

After competing at National History Day for several years, I was honored to be selected to attend the 2014 Albert H. Small Normandy Institute, where each student and teacher is given the opportunity to research World War II in depth and learn about a silent hero from their state. Our hero is Leroy E. Jacobson who was born in Canada, lived in Seattle and died on D-Day on the beaches of Normandy. In addition to researching our soldier at home, our journey took us to the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and ended at the American Cemetery in Normandy, France, where we eulogized Lt. Leroy Jacobson and honored his sacrifice.
